Today Houston Texans owner Bob McNair requested that his contribution to Campaign for Houston be returned. Campaign for Houston is working against HERO, Houston’s Equal Rights Ordinance. HERO provides protections for discrimination based on race, age, pregnancy, religion, military status, sexual orientation or gender identity.

Statement from Athlete Ally Founder and Executive Director Hudson Taylor

“Bob McNair, like many Houstonians, decided to take a second look at HERO, and realized that the values of sportsmanship require treating everyone fairly and equally, on the field and under the law. I hope others in Houston will also take this opportunity to educate themselves on the important protections that HERO provides.”

Athlete Ally’s mission is to educate and activate athletic communities to eliminate homophobia and transphobia in sports and to exercise their leadership to champion LGBT equality. Founded in 2011, Athlete Ally has worked with the NBA, WNBA, and MLB on matters of respect and inclusion; led the Principle 6 campaign that convinced the International Olympic Committee to include sexual orientation in the non-discrimination clause of the Olympic Charter; and counts more than 100 college, professional, and Olympic athletes among its dedicated and active Ambassadors.
