The latest news from the Athlete Ally community.
Health and fitness expert and creator of "Insanity" fitness program Shaun Blokker, better known as Shaun T, has signed on to become the newest Ambassador of Athlete Ally, a leading organization working to raise awareness about and end homophobia in sports. The addition of the celebrity trainer is part of Athlete Ally's ongoing efforts to empower allies to help make sports a welcoming environment for the LGBT community.
Blokker’s athletic and choreographic talents led him to success in the fitness training industry, and he produced highly successful programs like "Hip Hop Abs" and "Insanity". He recently stepped forward as a member of the LGBT community, and joining Athlete Ally affirms his commitment to making the world of sports and athletics as inclusive as possible.
“The joy of feeling free to be oneself in all aspects of life is not something that can endure if there is an underlying stressor,” said Shaun. “The ability of an athlete to step into their arena and feel free to be 100% focused on competing in their sport is the catalyst which separates the elite from the dedicated. This is essential to an athlete's success—it cannot be secondary.”
Shaun has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Conan, Dr. Oz, The Tyra Banks Show, The Talk, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
“It is a true honor to have Shaun T join the Athlete Ally Movement. He is a catalyst for the inclusion and positive change that we are continuing to see in the venue of sports,” said Hudson Taylor, Founder and Executive Director of Athlete Ally. “Another vocal, recognizable fitness and athletic personality on our team will undoubtedly help spread our message.”
As an Athlete Ally Ambassador, Shaun T joins Olympic wrestler Ellis Coleman, NBA star Kenneth Faried (Denver Nuggets), WNBA Player Kristi Toliver (Los Angeles Sparks), an NFL contingent of Brendon Ayanbadejo (Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens,) Chris Kluwe (Oakland Raiders), Scott Fujita (New Orleans Saints), Donte’ Stallworth (Washington Redskins), D’Qwell Jackson (Cleveland Browns), Connor Barwin (Philadelphia Eagles) free agent Chris Gocong, and Eric Barton (retired), tennis greats Andy Roddick, James Blake and Mardy Fish, MLS stars Omar Gonzalez, A.J. DeLaGarza, Stephen McCarthy and Chris Seitz, Dan Grunfeld (Israeli Basketball), Rashad Evans (UFC), 12 Minnesota United FC players, and four Australians in rugby stars David Pocock and James Hilterbrand, Australian Rules Football player Brock McLean, and World-Champion cricketer Alex Blackwell along with scores of college athletes who have already signed on. Shaun T will act as a liaison between Athlete Ally and his peers in the fitness world. He will help promote Athlete Ally’s mission to end homophobia in sports by speaking out to his peers, sport and fan base, and encouraging his colleagues to join in the effort.
