Job Opening — Programming & Communications Coordinator/Manager

Athlete Ally’s mission is to educate and activate athletic communities to eliminate homophobia and transphobia in sports and to exercise their leadership to champion LGBT equality.

Athlete Ally was formed to inspire athletes to act as leaders against anti-LGBTQ discrimination and use the power of sports to make a more equitable world. In the past five years, Athlete Ally has made groundbreaking progress in sports, working to create more inclusive cultures and inspire athletes to use their voices to support equality. As a leading organization in this space, Athlete Ally has engaged hundreds of college and professional athletes, organized international campaigns around LGBTQ inclusion in sports, partnered with professional sports leagues, and co-authored the NCAA’s first LGBT policy guide for college coaches, athletes, and administrators. In the short time since Athlete Ally was established, LGBTQ inclusion in sports and the role that athletes play in the global battle for LGBTQ rights have become key in mainstream media, politics, and in sports organizations at all levels of competition. Athlete Ally is a pioneering contributor to this space and aims to institutionalize comprehensive programs for long-term systemic impact.

The Programming & Communications Coordinator/Manager’s role will be to help design, oversee, and evaluate the impact of the organization’s day-to-day advocacy and communications work. The role will provide dedicated support to both the communications and programming functions, and report directly to the Director of Strategic Initiatives and Communications.

This role includes but is not limited to: outreach, advising college chapters, working with professional athlete ambassadors, building programs for youth through college athletic programs, creating meaningful organizational and community partnerships, community management across social media channels; earned media outreach; writing op-eds and other materials; research needs and more.

The Programming & Communications Coordinator/Manager’s primary responsibilities will include:

  • Working with teams, leagues, and organizations on creating proactive policies and practices that create a more equitable environment
  • Growing Athlete Ally’s 150+ large professional athlete network in an increasingly diverse and active direction
  • Advising Athlete Ally’s 30+ college chapters, our collegiate Ambassadors, and their programing, helping to continue elevating the work of student-athlete activists
  • Content creation and community management of Athlete Ally’s Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
  • Earned media outreach around major campaigns and initiatives
  • Drive day-to-day proactive monitoring of news and outreach to secure coverage for Athlete Ally’s point-of-view on relevant topics
  • Continuing Athlete Ally’s progress on the Athletic Equality Index — an overview of accessible, institutional committment to LGBTQ inclusion in the college athletic space
  • Coordinating athlete and team activation around positive or negative legislative action at the city, state, and national level
  • Synthesizing contempary research that relates to LGBTQ inclusion in sports, and create digestible and relevant materials for diverse audiences or staff/press use
  • Creating and manage meaningful external partnerships with other organizations and/or companies
  • Tracking and report on grant outcomes/progress on a monthly basis
  • Managing interns and other part-time staff as needed
  • Continuing to expand Athlete Ally’s work in an intersectional direction, and explore how systems of oppression work together in sports to harm all minority communities and designing athlete activism opportunities to call attention to relevant issues
  • Growing Athlete Ally’s high school presence and begin to adapt our programs and activations for younger age groups
  • Speaking, training, and presenting at relevant schools, conferences, and events on behalf of the organization
  • Identifying faculty at academic institutions to partner with to further the body of work that explores dimensions of LGBTQ inclusion in sport
  • Helping development, communications, and operations staff where relevant
  • Prepare programmatic updates and check-ins for Athlete Ally’s Board of Directors

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience
  • Familiairty with LGBTQ community and relevant challenges/issues
  • General sports knowledge and ability to understand the relevant intersection of sport and social justice
  • 1-3 years of relevant work experience
