Job Opening – Development Associate

Job Summary

Athlete Ally seeks a motivated, hard-working, and detail-oriented Development Associate to join our staff. The Development Associate is a new position we’re adding in 2018 and will help execute and help streamline our $1 million fundraising operations, while getting first-hand experience in all areas of fundraising and development, including events, major gifts, corporation and foundation relations, individual giving, and database management and gift processing.

About Athlete Ally

Athlete Ally is a nonprofit organization inspiring athletes to act as leaders championing LGBTQ equality. In the last five years, Athlete Ally has made unparalleled and groundbreaking progress in sports, working to create more inclusive cultures and helping athletes to use their voices to support LGBTQ equality. Since its founding in 2011, Athlete Ally has attracted more than 150 professional athletes and Olympians, and teams at more than 50 U.S. colleges and universities to champion the inclusion of LGBTQ athletes. Moreover, we are leveraging our partnerships with individual athletes and teams to advance our impact on LGBTQ public policy in states that lag in LGBTQ nondiscrimination protections. Examples of our accomplishments include creating a landmark campaign, Principle 6, which successfully lobbied the International Olympic Committee to include sexual orientation in the Olympic Charter. We also worked with the NBA on their historic decision to move the All-Star game from North Carolina in the wake of the anti-LGBTQ law HB2.

Principal Responsibilities

The newly-created position of Development Associate will play a critical role in helping us expand our Development efforts in 2018. The Development Associate will play an essential role in supporting the Development Director and Executive Director, by providing database management; administrative and operational support; and assisting with all development activities including the direct mail and membership programs, major donor program, corporate and foundation relations, and special events. It may require some occasional night and weekend work, and possible travel.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

Database and Development Operations Support

  • Maintain new and existing Salesforce records and help create and pull financial reports.
  • Perform all gift processing and coding of gifts in Salesforce.
  • Respond to phone and email inquiries from donors and prospects.
  • Proof and send acknowledgement letters at year-end to necessary donors.
  • Coordinate in-house mail appeals.
  • Send mass email appeals to members and prospective members.


  • Serve as primary “point person” for members and prospective supporters. 
  • Coordinate mailing of Athlete Ally t-shirts and stickers as part of membership program.
  • Help develop and disseminate the quarterly video message from the Executive Director.
  • Process new and renewed memberships.

Major Gifts

  • Help maintain files for major donors, including proposals and personal exchanges.
  • Assist with donor research for prospect.
  • Assist Development Director with the planning and execution of small major donor events.
  • Partner with the Development Director in fulfillment of stewardship activities, including mailings, invitations, and program updates.

Corporate and Foundation Relations

  • Help maintain electronic files for new, prospective, and current corporate contacts.
  • Research potential new corporate funders and prospective foundation funders.
  • Assist with the development of grant proposals to corporate and foundation prospects.
  • Assist with corporate volunteer coordination.

Special Events

  • Assist with the preparation and planning for the annual Action Awards, and other events, as determined.
  • Support the Action Awards Event Leadership and Host Committee with administrative support, including helping develop and disseminate grant proposals and solicitations for corporate and individual sponsors.
  • Help manage the “day of” operations for the Action Awards, including on-site auction; logistics with vendors; and registration and managements of guests and honorees/speakers.
  • Prepare and send invoices for sponsors after event.

Qualifications and Experience:

Bachelor or Associate degree and/or 2 years of prior database and development experience preferred. Experience with Salesforce or similar database system preferred. Strong attention to detail. Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities. Excellent verbal and written skills. Willingness to learn. A team player who will work across the organization and its teams. A passion for Athlete Ally’s work and mission to make sports more inclusive.

Interest and/or experience working for an LGBTQ organization or mission. Standard office computer skills, including word processing and spreadsheets.
