Athlete Ally Applauds Introduction of Federal Equality Act

July 23, 2015 — Today Athlete Ally applauds the introduction of the Equality Act into Congress.

The Equality Act would include protections for LGBT people in public accommodations, public education, employment, housing, federal funding, jury service, legal protections, and credit.

Statement from Hudson Taylor, Founder and Executive Director, Athlete Ally:

“Passing the Equality Act is important because it protects LGBT people from discrimination. Everyone should be treated fairly and equally, on the field and under the law. Until LGBT people are protected from discrimination, they can be kicked out of their homes, denied entry to sports stadiums, or turned away from a restaurant, just because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. It’s time our laws protect LGBT people from discrimination.”

Athlete Ally’s mission is to educate and activate athletic communities to eliminate homophobia and transphobia in sports and to exercise their leadership to champion LGBT equality. Founded in 2012, Athlete Ally has worked with the NBA, WNBA, and MLB on matters of respect and inclusion; led the Principle 6 campaign that convinced the International Olympic Committee to include sexual orientation in the non-discrimination clause of the Olympic Charter; and counts more than 100 college, professional, and Olympic athletes among its dedicated and active Ambassadors.
